On our way to Penasco Blanco

Trail to Penasco goes by a lot of petroglyphs

For perspective

Old stuff

Wonderful

Many figures, many years old

Its like a travel log

Spirits and stories

Spirals, snakes, animals

Interesting discs with figures

Marching ? Some are over 1000 years old

Cliff Swallow nests

More figures, scratches are R are most likely graffiti/vandalism

Serious stories of journeys and animals. Also art made by different peoples.

For perspective. Can you find the art? (top left)

Early pecking. There is evidence of human occupation in Chaco from 10,000 years ago

Beautiful work. Desert bighorn sheep image. The box and X shape are significant to archaeoastronomy.

This is to give perspective on the close up photo of this panel (see previous photo)

Very old petroglyph of lizard

Vandalism. Figure at bottom is probably real and in the faint sheep image above the horses back.

No horses existed before the Spanish invasion of the southwest.

A wider view

Look closely. More here than just the spiral;

Small figure and old mark top right

A familiar repeated image. Archeoastronomy

Snakes alive!

Vandalism

Nice panel

small hidden pictograph figure

Spirals and snakes and more!

More to see than a glance.

Nice, again more than one image here

Figures from two different peoples/times

Nice Group

A recorded journey?

Very old and some vandalism…ignorance

So much art

A nice panel but sadly more vandalism

Snake

Some animals and a jerk named Ted

Incised figures by possible Navajos

Busy panels, birthing stories? More vandalism, idiots

Some good stuff trashed by vandalism

All the pecking took time. The scathing by vandals only takes stupidity

weird double figures spiral and bighorn sheep

Maybe real , maybe not

Penasco Blanco visible on top of West Mesa

Getting ready to head down and cross Chaco Wash

The Super Nova pictograph, believed to represent the 1054 Supernova that was visible in the sky for nearly two years

A progression of animals, Deer?

a bighorn for sure

Snakes and more!

More

Spirals and figures and some old peckings

Familiar figures

After the hail

I heard a buzzing sound. The hummingbird was checking Tim’s bandanna

Really close

Where’s the nectar?

Hungry for the sweets!

Crazy!!

A look east up Chaco Canyon

A nice rock along the trail

Almost to Penasco Blanco

Penasco Blanco, once 3 stories high 215 rooms & 4 great kivas

There are mixed masonry styles as well

Bulit around the same time as Pueblo Bonito

A look east at this elevation provides almost an entire view of the canyon along an 8 mile axis line to Pueblo Bonito and Una Vida

Pot Shards

Looking west. A commanding view of the west entrance to Chaco Canyon

We waited out a second wave of light precipitation and high wind.

Good bye Penasco Blanco!

Looking east, up canyon at the rain falling

Some serious rain falling, but not on me!

Navajo petroglyphs

More Navajo. Quite modernistic

Some really precise art. Beautiful!

Back on the canyon floor, some Globe Mallow

Casa Chiquita, A small house located near a canyon mouth and dam.

Back at campground to watch the wind blow a storm past us without incident. But late that night…
